Purpose of Co-Op

The Wildflower cooperative provides community and support to families using home education as a path to break from the traditional model of education and explore alternative learning experiences for their children.

We offer families a holistic learning environment, via an engaging three day model, that encourages children to take ownership of their education, supports them in pursuing their personal goals and passions, and provides a flexible blend of academic and enrichment experiences.

Whether you’ve been homeschooling for a while or have recently come out of public or private institutions, we welcome your interest in our learning cooperative.

Location

Our learning cooperative is located at 158 Wall Ave in Paterson, NJ, right across from the ICPC masjid.

Daily Schedule

Co-op is held from September to June. All age groups meet three days per week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9:00am-3:30pm.

Beginning in Sep of 2024, our 3-6 Montessori group will also have an optional 4th day available. This program will run on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Learning Groups

Our cooperative serves families with children from ages 3-18. Children invited to join our program are enrolled into mixed age groups that allow for a range of abilities and social interactions. To learn more about our age groups, select a button below.

Note: Overlap in age groupings is intentional to allow children to be placed a bit higher or lower, depending on their individual skills and needs.

Activities

In addition to our weekly meets, our cooperative organizes regular trips, gatherings, and educational opportunities for our enrolled families, including:

  • 6 Discovery Days per year (organized group trips/ experiences)

  • Annual Homeschool Market Day

  • Annual Women of Wildflower and Men of Wildflower Social Gatherings

  • Year-long homeschool support and feedback for parents

  • Special events and community service opportunities

  • Annual End-of-Year Ceremony

Our Values

Islamic FoundationS

We value our Islamic Foundations and actively work to create an environment that honors and supports the Muslim child.

We work closely with spiritual leaders in the community to help educate our families, provide a safe space that fosters a strong Muslim identity, and encourages us all to learn and grow in our deen together.

We strive to create an environment that encourages Islamic character building, group prayers inside the mosque (dhuhr salah), spiritual reminders and knowledge woven throughout our program, sadaqah and volunteer opportunities throughout the year, and community support growing and living unapologetically as a Muslim American.

THE VILLAGE

We value The Village and work to build a thriving community of like-minded families to help our children and each other grow. Our families play an active role in their child's life, educational experience, spiritual and personal development. Our mentors, mentees, and parents actively work together to guide and support the child's learning journey. Outside of co-op, our member families often connect through community gatherings such as those offered by Prophetic Living and ICPC.

Self-directed learning

We value Self-Directed Education, and believe that children grow best when they are provided with a sense of agency over their lives and are allowed to make informed decisions about their educational paths and focus.

Individualized Learning

We value Individualized Learning and believe that every child's educational needs are unique and need to be respected. In collaboration with mentors and parents, we work to customize the child's learning journey through flexible choices, one-on-one conferencing, self-evaluations, and individualized plans.

You took a lonely homeschooler, her lonely kids, and gave us somewhere to be surrounded by support, advice and resources. It’s incredible
— SI, co-op parent

Our Approach

Engaging, Collaborative Learning

Our cooperative employs alternative methods of education that are hands-on, collaborative, and help build the child's sense of agency and ownership over their education. We use a variety of age-appropriate methods in order to accomplish this, including:

  • Montessori Method

  • Waldorf Method

  • Project-Based Learning

  • Inquiry-Based Learning

  • Flipped Classrooms

  • Passion Projects

  • Self-Paced Study

Mentorship

Each core discipline is led by team mentors and parents who:

  • guide, motivate, and encourage the mentees in their work

  • facilitate resources, discussion and activities that further learning

  • work collaboratively with the mentees to evaluate and informally assess their progress

  • identify areas of weakness and strength to customize the child's learning plan

Parental Involvement

Parents are the heart and soul of our cooperative. Being a member of our cooperative is a collaborative experience, with mentors and families working closely together to facilitate and support the children's learning needs.

Enrolled parents rotate as volunteers for the cooperative throughout the year. This allows parents to maintain active involvement in the cooperative and their child's learning experience, socialize and build bonds with other homeschooling parents, and support the daily running of the cooperative as a whole.

Note: Parents working full-time with inflexible schedules are allowed to submit an additional payment to have their volunteer hours covered each time they are on rotation. Proof of inflexible scheduling may be required.

21st Century Skills

To help prepare mentees to obtain positions of leadership and be more adaptable to our fast-paced changing world, our cooperative incorporates the following skills throughout our courses as needed and as are found to be developmentally appropriate for the age range:

  • Critical thinking

  • Communication skills

  • Creativity

  • Problem-solving

  • Perseverance

  • Collaboration

  • Information literacy

  • Technology skills and digital literacy

Assessments

Mentee progress is evaluated in various ways throughout the year:

  • One-on-One Conferencing

  • Project and Work Samples

  • Competitive Learning Challenges

  • Collaborative Progress Journals

  • Mentor and Family Feedback

  • Self-Evaluations

  • Individualized Learning Plans

  • Optional Course Grades for Homeschool Transcripts (high school mentees only)

Community Network

Our cooperative is supported by a beautiful network of families and community members who work together to provide resources, educational courses, volunteer service opportunities, internship opportunities, parent workshops, and so much more! Organizations we work closely with include ICPC, Prophetic Living, PACC, and Halal Pastures.
